TCF Canada writing examples: weak sentences and how to fix them
The best TCF Canada writing examples show a weak sentence next to its fix. Below you will find 3 examples for each task, with the corrected French and the reason, so you can spot the same mistakes in your own texts.
How to use these examples
A full model answer shows you what a good text looks like. A weak sentence with its fix shows you how to get there. Read each pair, cover the Better and Why columns, and try to correct the sentence yourself first.
The test has 3 writing tasks in 60 minutes: a message of 60 to 120 words, a report or story of 120 to 150 words, and a text of 120 to 180 words that compares two points of view and gives your opinion. For a full model answer of each task, open the guides for Task 1, Task 2 and Task 3.

Task 1 examples: the message
| Weak | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bonjour Madame, je voudrais savoir si tu peux m'envoyer le contrat. | Bonjour Madame, je voudrais savoir si vous pouvez m'envoyer le contrat. | Vous for an organization or a person you do not know. Do not mix tu and vous. |
| J'habite dans un appartement. Il est bien. Il y a une cuisine. | J'habite dans un appartement lumineux. Il est petit, mais la cuisine est ouverte sur le salon. | Join short sentences with mais, car or donc and use a precise adjective instead of "bien". |
| Salut Karim, mon quartier est calme. Au revoir. | Salut Karim, mon quartier est calme. Tu veux venir samedi ? Dis-moi vite ! | Cover every point of the instruction. If it says "invite your friend", you must invite. |
Task 2 examples: the report or story
| Weak | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hier, je vais au marché et je vois mon voisin. | Hier, je suis allé au marché et j'ai vu mon voisin. | A story about the past needs the passé composé for events. |
| Il a fait beau et j'ai été content. | Il faisait beau et j'étais content. | Use the imparfait for the weather, descriptions and feelings in the background. |
| C'était une belle journée. Je recommande. | Ce qui m'a le plus marqué, c'est l'ambiance. Je recommande cette expérience à tous mes voisins. | Task 2 asks you to add comments or arguments to your story. Say what you think about it and why, then close. |
Task 3 examples: two points of view and your opinion
| Weak | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Le premier document dit que le télétravail est stupide. | Selon le premier document, le télétravail réduit le stress, alors que le second affirme qu'il isole les employés. | Present both views in a neutral way and in your own words. Give your own opinion after that. |
| Je pense que le télétravail est bien parce que c'est bien. | À mon avis, le télétravail est utile, car il fait gagner du temps de transport. | An opinion needs a real reason. Never repeat the same word as the reason. |
| Le télétravail est utile. Les employés sont contents. | Le télétravail est utile. Par exemple, une employée qui habite loin du bureau gagne deux heures par jour. | Add one concrete example after your reason. It makes the argument stronger. |
Small mistakes that appear in every task
- Agreement: "Elle est très content" should be "Elle est très contente".
- Accents: "a" and "à", "ou" and "où" change the meaning. "Je vais à Montréal, où habite ma sœur" needs both accents.
- Verb endings: "Il mange" and "Ils mangent" sound the same in speech but are different on paper.
- Word count: a text outside the word range of its task is a risk. Count your words and aim for the middle of the range.
Why these fixes matter for your score
IRCC converts your writing score into an NCLC level. On the IRCC table for TCF Canada, 10 to 11 points is NCLC 7, 12 to 13 is NCLC 8, 14 to 15 is NCLC 9 and 16 to 20 is NCLC 10 and above. Many programs ask for NCLC 7, so removing even a few repeated mistakes can matter.

Turn examples into practice
- Write one task with a timer. For all three tasks you have 60 minutes, so a simple split is about 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 25 minutes, with 5 minutes to reread. This is a suggestion, not an official rule.
- Compare your text with the pairs above. Look for the same types of mistakes.
- Rewrite each wrong sentence yourself. Do not only read the correction.
- Keep a list of your own top 5 mistakes and check for them in the next text.
When you want a full timed run, try the writing mock exam. You can also read our writing template for simple frames.
